I also like Luiz Fernando Carvalho’s works, is the only other screenwriter that matches some of Suassuna’s tone (the folktale tone I mean, Carvalho’s lean way more into drama and romance, less comedy). The film has a very “folktale” feeling to it, if anyone has access I’d recommend most of Suassuna’s novels, poetry and plays. Talk about an insular bubble, don’t know why this haven’t crossed my mind before, of course some of if would resonate with Spanish speakers. Ooooh I’m so happy that you enjoyed this OP, and this is the first time that I realized that some of the dialogue and language quirks can, in fact, be translated into Spanish. But for the love of god, please don't go on letterboxd accusing Brazilians of being trolls for giving this a high score. Otherwise, you might wanna skip this one. If you're a Brazilian, Portuguese or Hispanic, and like the type of totally embellished funny stories your dad used to tell you, you'll probably enjoy it. I'm sure there were similarly hilarious things I missed that only a Brazilian would get, but overall I still found it pretty funny, and it made me weirdly nostalgic. I doubt I would've enjoyed that scene as much as I did if Portuguese wasn't so similar to Spanish. For example, the scene where the main character, Jack the Cricket, keeps saying "é? Ou não é?" (direct translation: "is it or isn't it?", meaning "am I right?") was hilarious and kinda surprising to me, cause it's an annoying expression I've heard all my life as a Puerto Rican, but this was the first time I've ever heard it on screen, and it was in a film from a country I've never been to, in a language I don't speak.
It's one of the few films I've watched that I believe doesn't translate well past certain cultural barriers. And if you appreciate it for what it is, you'll find it to be a memorable, charming film deserving of its awards and praise.īut liking the delivery depends a lot on where you're from. Certainly not comedy genius, but funny nonetheless if you can appreciate the delivery. You know those classic "X, Y and Z talk to Saint Peter/walk into a bar" and love affair jokes? It's that type of comedy. This critically acclaimed award winning film is a comedy flick with purposefully over-the-top cartoonish acting and tone.
